Academic Profile

Dr Eng. Beata Anwajler is a researcher and academic teacher at the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering, Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Her research focuses on heat transfer, advanced thermal insulation materials, architected cellular materials, additive manufacturing, and thermal energy storage using phase change materials (PCMs).

A major area of her current research concerns the development and thermal characterisation of additively manufactured highly porous cellular structures and metamaterials with controlled thermal properties. Her work investigates how internal architecture, topology, porosity, cell size, material properties, and manufacturing parameters affect effective thermal conductivity and overall heat-transfer mechanisms in lightweight cellular structures.

Her research encompasses both periodic lattice structures and complex porous architectures, including Kelvin, BCC, FCC, Diamond, Octet, auxetic and Voronoi-based structures, as well as triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) geometries such as Gyroid, Diamond and Schwarz-P.

Particular emphasis is placed on understanding the coupled contribution of solid and gas conduction, thermal radiation, and natural convection within porous media. Experimental investigations are complemented by analytical and numerical modelling aimed at predicting the effective thermal conductivity and transient thermal response of architected materials.

Another important research direction is the integration of phase change materials (PCMs) with additively manufactured porous structures for thermal energy storage and thermal management applications. This work focuses on polymer–PCM composites and PCM-filled cellular structures designed to combine low thermal conductivity with enhanced thermal inertia and latent heat storage capacity.

Her current research explores the use of paraffin-based PCMs, bio-based phase change materials, and polymer–PCM composites in highly porous structures manufactured by additive technologies. Particular attention is given to the influence of phase transitions on heat-flux attenuation, thermal damping, phase shift, and the dynamic thermal behaviour of structural barriers.

Research Areas

Her principal research areas include:

  • architected cellular materials and thermal metamaterials;

  • additive manufacturing and 3D printing of functional materials;

  • thermal conductivity and heat transfer in porous structures;

  • lattice structures and triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS);

  • phase change materials (PCMs) and thermal energy storage;

  • polymer and polymer-composite thermal insulation materials;

  • bio-based and biodegradable materials for thermal applications;

  • heat and mass transfer in porous media;

  • numerical modelling and computational heat transfer;

  • thermal characterisation using heat-flow and infrared thermography techniques;

  • thermal management systems and heat exchangers;

  • energy-efficient building envelopes and advanced building insulation;

  • refrigeration engineering and phase-change heat-transfer processes.

Experimental and Numerical Research

Her research combines experimental thermal characterisation, mathematical modelling, and numerical simulation.

Experimental work includes the determination of effective thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of porous and cellular materials, transient heat-flow measurements, thermal imaging, and hot-box testing of structural barriers under controlled boundary conditions.

Numerical investigations are primarily conducted using COMSOL Multiphysics and ANSYS, with particular emphasis on steady-state and transient heat transfer, conduction–radiation interaction, natural convection in porous structures, anisotropic thermal conductivity, heat and moisture transport, and phase-change phenomena.

The modelling approach includes homogenisation techniques, effective-medium models, analytical bounds for heterogeneous materials, and detailed geometrical models of representative cellular structures.

Additive Manufacturing

A significant part of her research is devoted to the design and optimisation of structures manufactured using additive manufacturing technologies, including stereolithography/resin-based printing and fused deposition modelling.

The objective is to establish quantitative relationships between:

material properties → cellular architecture → manufacturing parameters → heat-transfer mechanisms → effective thermal performance.

This approach enables the internal geometry of a material to be treated as an additional design variable, allowing its thermal properties to be tailored without changing the base material itself.

The research is directed towards the development of lightweight multifunctional materials for applications in thermal insulation, building envelopes, thermal energy storage, cold-chain and packaging systems, and thermal management devices.

Current Research Focus

Her current work is particularly focused on:

1. Additively manufactured cellular thermal insulation

Development of highly porous polymer structures with controlled effective thermal conductivity through optimisation of topology, porosity, cell size, orientation, and material distribution.

2. Architected thermal metamaterials

Investigation of lattice and TPMS structures in which thermal transport can be tailored through geometrical design and control of solid-phase connectivity.

3. Cellular structures integrated with phase change materials

Development of multifunctional structures combining thermal insulation with latent heat storage, including polymer–PCM composites and porous structures filled or partially filled with PCMs.

4. Dynamic thermal behaviour of PCM-enhanced structures

Experimental and numerical analysis of heat-flux attenuation, thermal damping, phase shift, thermal inertia, and cyclic thermal response under variable boundary conditions.

5. Bio-based and sustainable polymer composites

Development and thermal characterisation of polymer composites containing natural, biodegradable, and waste-derived fillers for additive manufacturing.

6. Additively manufactured heat exchangers

Design and numerical optimisation of complex internal geometries for enhanced heat transfer and controlled pressure losses in compact heat exchangers.

International Research Collaboration

Her research activities include international collaboration with the University of L’Aquila, Italy, particularly in the field of experimental characterisation of additively manufactured thermal insulation structures and cellular materials integrated with phase change materials.

The collaboration combines expertise in additive manufacturing, building physics, thermal characterisation, hot-box testing, and numerical heat-transfer modelling.

Research stays at the University of L’Aquila have included experimental investigations of highly porous 3D-printed structures under cyclic thermal boundary conditions and studies of the influence of different PCMs on heat-flux attenuation and transient thermal behaviour.

Scientific Approach

Her research is based on the concept that the thermal performance of modern materials is determined not only by their chemical composition but also by their internal architecture.

Accordingly, cellular topology is treated as a controllable engineering parameter that can be used to modify conduction paths, radiative heat transfer, gas-phase transport, local convection, anisotropy, thermal inertia, and heat-storage capacity.

The overarching objective is to develop a comprehensive relationship between:

material – architecture – manufacturing process – heat-transfer mechanisms – thermal performance – application.

This framework supports the rational design of next-generation multifunctional architected materials for thermal insulation, thermal energy storage, and thermal management applications.
